About Us

Change the Beat is a Non-Profit organization dedicated to empowering electronic music artists, producers, and DJs by providing access to education, mentorship, workshops, and networking opportunities, with a focus on women and underrepresented voices. Founded by Sydney Blu, the initiative fosters a supportive community of thriving and innovative artists who are making their mark on the global music industry. Through its efforts, Change the Beat aims to elevate underrepresented voices by providing access to production tools, creative mentorship, and career-building opportunities.

Originally launched as #23by23 with the support of Native Instruments and in partnership with Beatport, Change the Beat continues its mission of promoting gender equality in electronic music. The organization actively works to challenge the industry's current gender imbalance—where only 5% of signed artists are women or gender-expansive individuals—by collaborating with record labels to increase representation.

A key part of Change the Beat's approach includes remix competitions hosted on Beatport's LabelRadar platform. Major labels like Drumcode, Mau5trap, Armada, Anjunadeep, Anjunabeats, HE.SHE.THEY, Insomniac Records, Nervous Records, and Toolroom Records are among those participating, providing emerging artists with opportunities to release music, win prizes like Native Instruments gear, and gain valuable exposure. The program has also collaborated with high-level artists such as Nicole Moudaber, deadmau5, Lights, Maya Jane Coles, Eli & Fur, DJ Minx, VNSSA, Giorgia Angiuli, Azzecca, and more through its events and remix contests, further cementing its impact within the industry.

Looking ahead to 2025, Change the Beat will expand its global reach through club events, showcases, and festival appearances featuring both established headliners and program alumni. These events will not only highlight the music nurtured within the program but also offer educational workshops designed to mentor new artists, led by experienced female ambassadors in the industry.

Since its inception in December 2021, Change the Beat has made significant strides, including winning the Beatport Parity Prize for nonprofit excellence in dance music. In 2024, the organization was also nominated for Organization of the Year by Women in Music Canada. With a growing Discord community of over 900 members, the organization has awarded prizes to 80 new women and gender-expansive artists, supported them in releasing their music, and connected them with the resources necessary to thrive in the electronic music scene.
